SUMMARY:ClimaTea Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:
Speaker: Chris Chan

Chris Chan will be presenting on Smith et. al. (2016). His thoughts on this paper are:

Rate of global mean surface temperature (GMST) warming has slowed this century despite the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases. Popular explanations include ocean heat uptake associated with a negative phase of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) pattern that is commonly assume to be naturally fluctuating internal climate variability. This work, however, shows that the negative phase of PDO may be controlled by changes in anthropogenic aerosol emission through modulating atmospheric circulation. Their results also indicate that as China continues to reduce its emission, a positive phase of PDO and increased GMST will be predicted.
