Here, we study seasonally migrating convergence zones in an idealized atmospheric general circulation model in a wide range of configurations and climates. In particular, we explore dynamical and thermodynamical mechanisms mediating the response of tropical precipitation to changes in surface heat capacity, planetary rotation rate and atmospheric long wave optical depth. Implications for observed monsoons on Earth and seasonal weather patterns on terrestrial planets will also be discussed. [Background reading]
