SUMMARY:ClimaTea Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:
Speaker: Katie Dagon

Katie is presenting on Berg et al. (2014) and says the following about the paper:

Soil moisture is an essential variable in land-atmosphere dynamics; it both responds to and influences atmospheric conditions such as temperature and precipitation. Berg et al. (2014) explore the effect of soil moisture dynamics on distributions of summertime temperatures. In particular, they include changes in higher-order distribution moments in addition to the mean and standard deviation. They also analyze how different regions respond on synoptic versus interannual time scales. While their setup is idealized and limited to one model, the paper presents interesting questions about the role of soil moisture in land-atmosphere coupling, with a natural application to future extreme heat events.
