SUMMARY:ClimaTea Journal Club: "Uncertainties of indirect aerosol radiative forcing"
DESCRIPTION:<div>Please join us for our weekly ClimaTea seminar. <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Graduate student, Lauren Kuntz</strong></span>, will lead a discussion of a recent paper by Carslaw et al. (2013), summarized below:</div><div><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" data-mce-mark="1">"</span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" data-mce-mark="1">Carslaw et al. investigate the main sources of uncertainty in indirect aerosol radiative forcing over the industrial period.  A variance-based sensitivity analysis is conducted on a global aerosol model to determine the relative contribution of individual parameterizations on the overall uncertainty.  Their results suggest that the majority of the variance in net indirect aerosol forcing comes from uncertainty in natural emissions due to the high sensitivity of albedo to emissions in near pristine environments.  In order to constrain indirect aerosol uncertainty, Carslaw et al. suggest that the research focus should be placed on understanding pre-industrial aerosols. "</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" data-mce-mark="1"> </span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" data-mce-mark="1">In addition to Carslaw et al. (2013), Lauren recommends Lee et al. (2013) for additional background reading -- both are attached. We hope to see everyone there!</span></div>
