Inez Fung Professor of Atmospheric Science Univeristy of California, Berkeley   The Tibetan Plateau and East Asian Banded Precipitation

The concept of the “Asian monsoon” masks the existence of two separate summer rainfall regimes: convective storms over India, Bangladesh and Nepal (the South Asian monsoon) and banded rainfall over China, Japan and Korea (East Asian monsoon). Here we focus on the East Asian summer monsoon, and present analysis of its precipitation variability over the past 50 years. Emphasis will be placed on the deflection of the jet stream downstream of the Tibetan Plateau and its role in changing precipitation patterns.
