ClimaTea Journal Club

Date:

Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 3:00pm

Location:

Seminar Room MCZ, 429

Speaker: Huize Wang

Huize will lead a ClimaTea discussion on the some recently discovered Earth-sized exoplanets orbiting TRAPPIST-1 and their possible atmosphere compositions.
In the discussion, Huize will lead us through the following key points:

  • Transit observations provide critical information that leads to the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 planets.
  • Transit spectroscopy helps us to understand the atmosphere compositions. For example, it rules out the possibility to have cloud-free hydrogen-dominated atmospheres for some planets.
  • Certain aspects of climate states and habitability of these exoplanets can be inferred from this observation, although caveats and limitations exist.
