This week GS Cristi Proistosescu will be leading discussion on Xie, Kosaka, and Okumura, 2016: Distinct energy budgets for anthropogenic and natural changes during global warming hiatus. Cristi says the following about the paper:

"The main result of the paper is that net climate feedbacks are different during periods of anthropogenic warming versus natural cooling. The authors find that top-of-the-atmosphere radiation and global mean surface temperature are much less tightly coupled for natural decadal variability then for the GHG forced response. This paper offers a good case study for a broader discussion of the concept of efficacy of external forcing and ocean heat uptake, particularly as it relates to interpreting natural variability and forced response in the historical record. Two additional recent reference are attached - Rose et al 2015 - discuss efficacy of Ocean Heat Uptake, while  Marvel et al 2015 discuss efficacy of different external forcings."
